Earlier this month, staff at Stray Rescue of St. Louis received a call that broke their hearts. It was from a new owner who was getting ready to move into his new home.
“I just bought a house and there’s a pit bull chained up in the basement,” he said. “I’m not sure how long he’s been down there”
The rescuers rushed to the house, where, as they were told, an illegal occupant had been staying some time before – leaving behind garbage, debris … and a precious life, alone in the dark and cold. Fortunately, the poor puppy was found in time to be saved.
And she couldn’t have been happier.
“When I opened the basement door and shone the flashlight down, I saw a tail wagging,” Natalie Thomson, the group’s director of communications, told The Dodo. “She almost choked herself because she was so excited to see us. When I released her, she wouldn’t stop jumping and hugging.”
No one knows who left the dog behind or why, but it was clear he wouldn’t have lasted much longer.
“There were no bowls of food or water that we could see,” Thomson said. “She was not sterilized and did not have a microchip”
But at least she was safe now, and she knew this: “Because of her enthusiasm, I named her Jumping Bean!”
Here’s a video of the moment Jumping Bean was rescued and a look at the happier life that now awaits her.
What makes the lonely and isolated situation Jumping Bean finds herself in all the worse is that she has such an unrelenting lust for life – and eagerness to be loved.
“Her personality is completely adorable,” Thomson said. “He loves everyone he meets and craves attention. She makes sure she is not ignored! She is an energetic and very affectionate puppy! She’s so happy all the time”
And it shows.
Thank you rescuers for all you do to help these animals
