“It brings tears to my eyes when I see him interacting with these birds.”
A great horned owl named GiGi was brought to Wild at Heart Rescue in Mississippi one day when she was near death. The unfortunate woman was by herself when she was struck by a car, resulting in a life-threatening brain injury.
“The fact that this bird lived is beyond comprehension,” said Missy Dubuisson, the rescue’s founder.
She suffered a massive contusion, her body was full of parasites, and she had a condition called aspergillosis, which is similar to pneumonia in humans. She was so sick that during treatment she lost a whole kilogram of weight, which is about 20-50% of her total weight.
The owl was so grateful to her rescuer Doug that she couldn’t stop hugging him when he returned from a trip
“This bird was one of the most critical I have ever cared for”
If there was anyone who could have taken care of Gigi, it would have been Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, who is also known as the “Bird of Prey Whisperer” The recovery probably wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for Doug.
Watch Doug the Bird Whisperer carefully feed the injured GiGi:
“They absolutely know him and trust him. It’s the confidence you see on her face”
“In all my years of working with birds of prey, I have never seen anyone with such a connection to these magnificent birds,” explained Dubuisson. GiGi trusted Doug completely.
When Doug returned from a trip to visit his family, GiGi couldn’t contain her excitement. He started dancing and couldn’t stop hugging him. “It literally brings tears to my eyes to see him interact with these birds,” added Dubuisson. “They absolutely know him and trust him. It’s the confidence you see on her face”
